LG's 55-inch OLED TV due in July for $10,000

1 hr.

LG unveiled the production version of its revolutionary 55-inch OLED to European dealers and journalists in Monaco this week?against the backdrop of the final preparations for the weekend?s Grand Prix race. The prototype was first seen at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show?in Las Vegas last January.

The company?is targeting the first shipments of the TV ?? which will cost $10,000? ? to?the United States, South?Korea and select European countries, starting?in July.

The 55EM9600?s screen is just 4 mm thick, and uses white organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to produce a very bright, highly saturated image. LG developed its??Color Refiner??filter?technology (using four color sub-pixels?? red, green, blue and white)?to enhance image contrast and color.

Taking a cue from Formula 1 race cars, the 55EM9600 uses carbon fiber to strengthen and lighten the TV?s plastic exterior. The 9600 weighs in at just 22 pounds, a record low for a 55-Inch display (and?about 29 pounds less than LG?s 55-Inch LM8600 LED LCD).

"With OLED TV leading our premium product line-up in Europe, we have a very strong case to become the No. 1?TV brand in this region," said Stanley Cho, head of LG?s Europe Operations. "Until that day, we will continue to develop the products that have made us the most innovative home entertainment company in the industry."

LCD and LED LCDs rely on light bulbs (whether fluorescent or a few dozen white LED lamps) to illuminate the image. The light from these lamps or bulbs must pass through the LCD panel before reaching the surface of the TV, causing most of the light to be beamed toward viewers sitting closest to the center of the screen. As one moves off-center, the LCD image dims, contrast decreases and colors tend to shift and desaturate.

OLEDs emits light directly from the surface, extending the viewing angle to 180 degrees and providing superb, highly saturated colors without the dimming, color shift or loss of contrast seen on LCDs and LED LCDs.

The 55EM9600 is a full-featured HDTV incorporating LG?s passive Cinema 3-D technology as well as Smart TV Internet connectivity and its own browser for streaming movies and Web surfing.

The TV will be available in three mounting versions: table top, wall mount and pole mount. Each configuration incorporates the same OLED panel but a uses a different case. The inputs and drive electronics are located within the stand on the table top model (see photo) and features a transparent arm between the base and panel. The wall mount version and pole mount models will have a separate box that houses the electronics.

We'll be sharing more information?about the 55EM9600 in the days ahead, including specifications and other photos.

How the transit of Venus opened the planet to our forefathers

Author Mark Anderson of 'The Day the World Discovered the Sun' explains how the transit of Venus allowed 18th-century astronomers to create an early GPS system.

By Randy Dotinga / May 25, 2012

The planet Venus will dart across the sun on June 5 ? but don't look for it unless you have the proper equipment.

Last weekend, many of us here on the West Coast dabbled in a bit in astronomy during a partial eclipse of the sun. With the sun low on the horizon, I stole a quick glance to see if I could glimpse a shadow.

Yup, I did. And then I saw something else: stars. My eyes!

My advice: Do not try this at home. And definitely don't even think about it at around sunset ET on June 5, when the planet Venus will do something really unusual. It will dart across the sun, and much of the world will be able to watch it make its move with the right (and safe) equipment.

It's called the transit of Venus. The planet will appear as little dark circle on the sun as it zips between us and that big yellow ball.

If you want to catch it, hope for a clear sky because you won't see it again. About every 120 years or so, transits of Venus come in clusters ? two in eight years. The last one was in 2004, and we won't see another until well into the 22nd century. Astronomers long ago figured out when the transit of Venus would occur, and they discovered that timing it down to the second would give them tremendous insight into the solar system.

When the event occurred on June 3, 1769, scientists ? including the famous Captain James Cook ? fanned around the globe in an attempt to uncover the secrets of the universe.

In his new book The Day the World Discovered the Sun: An Extraordinary Story of Scientific Adventure and the Race to Track the Transit of Venus, author Mark Anderson uncovers the tales of the men who literally went to the ends of the earth in search of discovery.

In an interview, Anderson talked about the goals of the missions, the way 18th-century scientists managed to measure time to the second (hint: not with an iPhone stopwatch), and how clouds on the big date may be more than just a mood-buster.

Q: What was the big mystery that all these scientists were trying to solve?

A: In two words, it was "how far."

How far is the most important thing in our universe, the sun? And how far would you go to find that answer? Would you be willing to lay down your life? A host of scientists and explorers at this time did just that.

The other question is essential to the story: How far is the shore? That's the other question, the one that ship navigators could not answer. As a result, thousands of people died gruesome deaths at sea by shipwreck or being lost at sea.

These astronomers had invented an 18th-century GPS system that opened up the entire planet to seafaring nations. The voyages were the perfect testing grounds for this new technology.

The cool thing for the story is that to find the answer to both questions, you have to go to the ends of the earth. That sets the stage for an amazing adventure.

Q: How did this one event in the skies provide so much information?

The Greeks should not expect sympathy, says IMF boss Christine Lagarde who is 'more worried' about schooling in Africa

  • IMF unwilling to soften terms of its hated austerity package for Greece
  • Lagarde criticised Greek citizens who are trying to escape paying tax
  • She said Greece must make more of an effort to sort out its finances

Christine Lagarde also criticised Greek citizens 'who are trying to escape tax,' and said the country needs to make more of an effort

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund says she has more sympathy for poor African children than Greeks suffering under the country's economic problems and austerity measures.

Asked whether she worried about the economic and social impact of austerity in the Mediterranean country, Christine Lagarde told the Guardian: 'No, I think more of the little kids from a school in a little village in Niger who get teaching two hours a day, sharing one chair for three of them, and who are very keen to get an education.

'I have them in my mind all the time. Because I think they need even more help than the people in Athens.'

Her comments come as the IMF increases the pressure on the Eurozone nation and makes it clear it will not be softening the terms of the nation's austerity package that is deeply unpopular with the country's electorate.

Lagarde also criticised Greek citizens 'who are trying to escape tax,' and said the country needs to club together to make more of an effort to solve its economic problems.

Greece's tax revenues are currently down by a third in a year and it has been ordered to improve this to help ease the debt.

At the moment, its economy is being kept afloat on international loans provided by the European Union and the IMF, along with the harsh austerity package.

?

As part of the loan deal it has been ordered to cut everything from wages to public spending to? try and get and get the finances back on track.

Lagarde agreed in the interview that in essence that it is 'payback time' for the country.

The government that agreed to the loan and austerity package was voted out of office in May.?

The new parties, who mainly campaigned on anti-austerity platforms, have not been able to form a government and new elections are scheduled for June 17.

'The Catalonia news was a big deal because it implies that the Spanish government may have to take on more debt and it cannot afford to do so,' said Richard Franulovich, senior currency strategist at Westpac Securities in New York.???

More Mental Health Care Urged for Kids Who ... - Health and Fitness

By Dennis Thompson
HealthDay Reporter

FRIDAY, May 25 (HealthDay News) ? Doctors have long known that some kids suffering severe emotional turmoil find relief in physical pain ? cutting or burning or sticking themselves with pins to achieve a form of release.

But researchers now are questioning whether enough is being done to reach out to these young people and help them before they do themselves irreparable damage.

One study this year found that six of every 10 adolescents who went to an emergency room for treatment after harming themselves were released without receiving a mental health assessment or any follow-up mental health care. The findings were reported in the February issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child amp; Adolescent Psychiatry.

?Most young people who self-harm suffer from some underlying psychological disorder,? said Jeffrey Bridge, a researcher with the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice at Nationwide Children?s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and the study?s lead author. ?It?s critical to conduct a mental health assessment in addition to the evaluation of their physical health if we?re to get to the root of their problems.?

Between 8 and 10 percent of all adolescents are believed to engage in some form of self-injurious behavior, Bridge said.

These children cut themselves with sharp edges, burn themselves with matches, stick needles into their skin or under their nails, or perform other acts of self-mutilation.

?I had one little boy that had one whole quarter of his head, he?d pulled out all the hair,? said Mary Curran, executive director of Catholic Family Services in Crestwood, Mo., and a psychologist who specializes in self-harming behaviors.

Kids most often hurt themselves like this to deal with emotional problems such as stress or depression.

?It helps them deal with their feelings,? Curran said. ?It?s a distraction for them. It?s usually to give them something else to think about and something else to do with their hands.?

There are other reasons, too, said Dr. Stephanie Sims, a psychiatrist with the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville. Some hurt themselves to get attention, others because they?re angry with themselves or because it helps them resist suicidal impulses. Some even hurt themselves to feel the ?high? that comes with the body?s release of hormones in response to pain signals.

The best treatment for kids who self-harm is to deal with their underlying emotional problems, experts say. ?The key component of any intervention would be treatment of the underlying psychopathology,? Bridge said.

That?s why it is crucial that emergency rooms identify adolescents engaging in self-harming behaviors and get them therapeutic help, he said.

Once identified, kids can be treated using such psychotherapeutic techniques as cognitive-behavioral therapy, Sims said. They also can receive pharmaceutical help through medications such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs.

But unfortunately, Bridge said, the culture at most hospitals works against kids getting help during those crucial interactions at emergency rooms.

?Previous research indicates some hospitals and emergency departments have no access to mental health professionals,? he said. ?Also, staff will often minimize the seriousness of self-harm, especially if patients have presented in the recent past.?

That makes it all the more important that parents pay attention to potential warning signs. These include:

  • Kids wearing unseasonably warm clothes that cover their bodies. ?That could tip you off that there?s something on the child?s body that they?re trying to hide,? Sims said.
  • Unusual cuts, scrapes or bruises on an adolescent?s body.
  • Expressions of anxiety, depression or hopelessness.

?It can be difficult,? Curran said. ?Kids are pretty sneaky about how they do that. It?s very difficult for parents to catch it.?

Sims recommends that parents who think they see warning signs approach their kids with ?respectful curiosity.?

?Ask them what is cutting doing for them,? she suggested. ?What do they get out of it? Ask about suicide, but don?t assume that they are suicidal. Let them know you want to help improve their coping skills so they don?t have to use cutting as a way to deal with their emotions.?

Easy Ways To Implement Home Improvement Projects Today ...

It doesn?t have to be complicated or expensive to do home improvement projects. Your home can be more comfortable, valuable and attractive by only making simple changes. You can save on your bills by making your home more up to date, by making it more green or energy-efficient. Any time you make changes, they are going to be of various levels, where some will be major and others only minor. Make sure you windows are well insulated, and change your light bulbs to energy savers. If you use low-flow toilets, shower heads and garden hose, you can save a lot of water. The interior temperature of your home is also an improvement that you can focus upon, specifically by adding an air conditioning and central air system.

A garden is a great thing that you can add as well. A garden is a great thing to add for a variety of reasons. The backyard of your home can be livened up with a garden, especially if you plant vegetables or flowers. Another thing you should think about is adding indoor plants to help brighten up your home?s interior. If you?re going to have plants on the inside, choose larger plants.
